Play Tennis, Win in Life
The word ‘tennis’ cannot possibly be fully explained in the dictionary. It’s not just a game that’s played by two or four players on a rectangular court divided by tennis nets; it’s more than an image of rackets and balls bouncing back and forth - tennis is a lifestyle!
As Richard Evans once said, “tennis is not as gentle as it may look”. Requiring a good deal of strategising, a ton of psyching up and lots and lots of spot on practice, it is a mental and emotional game as much as it is physical. Without a doubt, tennis is a sport that not only allows you to enjoy its health benefits, it also contributes towards a better and more fruitful life.
Life lessons you will learn from tennis:
You win some, you lose some
“You’ve got to get to the stage in life where going for it is more important than winning or losing.” – Arthur Ashe
Do you know what you gain when you learn to lose gracefully? Two things: the respect and awe of others and your dignity. There is nothing wrong with losing a game of tennis… such is life. Accept failures and let them inspire you to work harder and to persevere, even when it seems like the only option left is to give up.
Tennis will teach you to appreciate the talents and skills of other people. It will also make you understand the real meaning of going for it and not just for titles, merits and achievements. After all, there’s so much more to life than winning and losing.
Character matters most
“Sports do not build character. They reveal it.” – Heywood Hale Broun
Your opponent and the spectators already know you by the way you stand up in court. They can easily recognise how confident (or terrified) you are while you’re warming up. Sports such as tennis reveal so much about a person, even more they would willingly like to show.
The way you carry yourself on and off court is a reflection of who you are. If you let your personality shine through, you’re a real winner!
One word: PRACTICE.
“If you don’t practice, you don’t deserve to win.” – Andre Agassi
A familiar saying, “practice makes perfect” doesn’t necessarily mean that you have to play perfectly all the time; you do have to understand the importance of training and determination though. Just remember, all the famous tennis players, athletes, musicians and artists today were once just like you or I. All their talents and skills did not come overnight; only through hard work, perseverance and extreme training did they become celebrated.
You are your own worst enemy, you are your own best friend
“I'm not afraid of anyone, but sometimes I'm afraid of myself. The mental part is very important.” – Justine Henin
Any tennis professional will tell you that the game is mental more than physical. Tennis is a very competitive sport, hence the immense pressure that weighs down on the players. It is so easy to get psyched out because of the intimidating competition or because you’ve missed a shot or two. You should stop crowding your mind with negativity – remember, sheer grit and determination!
Mental endurance is as essential as any technique you’ve learned along the way; just like the muscles in your body, mental endurance can be strengthened and developed over time. Focus your mind and get rid of any doubts… you can do this!
“Success is a journey, not a destination. The doing is often more important than the outcome.” – Arthur Ashe
After all the rules you’ve learned and the techniques that you have embedded in your system, never forget to enjoy the game. Remember why you started it in the first place, what you feel whenever you smash the ball and all the people you’ve connected with along the way. Celebrate victories and acknowledge defeats. Like tennis, life can be hard but there is always beauty and joy to be found.
